The Power of Someday

Have you ever held off putting something on your To Do list because you were afraid you would have to do it now? A wonderfully simple list you can create for yourself, to capture those things you might like to get to, but it doesn’t quite belong on a current To Do list yet is what David Allen calls the “Someday/Maybe” list.

Imagine giving yourself the freedom to capture anything, even if you don’t think you have the time, talent, resources or money to do it now. Anything from learning, buying, writing, growing or fixing something to exploring some new place to updating some part of your life, your systems, your house, your body…whatever. The only commitment you need to have to what you put on your Someday/Maybe list is be willing to look at the list every few weeks so that it stays alive and current. And when you do review it, it’s just fine to say, “Not now” and let it roll along for a few more months or years. It’s also a wonderful place to “seed” for what you might like to have come forward in your life. Many people experience putting something on a Someday/Maybe list when they had no idea how they could ever do it. Before long, it actually became a reality.

“You won’t see how to do it until you see yourself doing it.”

-David Allen

It’s amazing the power of being able to capture without the pressure to do. And for all of the things you actually do need to do now, or as soon as you can get to it, check out Getting Things Done

Great post and great idea. I think I’ll get a notebook so I can have a page for each idea. That way I’ll be able to add any related ideas that I can after the original idea.

Hi There Tom

Just scanning through your blog. I don’t know if you do this, but it’s a great way of seeing thought progression, reading your blog backwards. After all that’s the way you wrote it.

Just thought that you might like to write a quite post linking back to this one, with the idea that having a To Do/Maybe/Someday List is one thing. But how do we make it Happen?
I haven’t got the answer to this, but I think that one way to do it is to rename every day of the week as being Someday. This could help you get things done. It has a little to do with suspending belief enough to think like that, but I just might work.
I reprogrammed myself over a long period of time to respond with enthusiasm whenever someone asked me how I am. In the same way I always tell people to have more than merely a good day. It comes down to actively practising the idea until it becomes natural.

Thought you may be interested.

Have a Fantastic Day
